It's not often I comment on the news, but I cannot stay silent on this.
I cannot stay silent when lives of 50 innocent human beings end in horror in a mass shooting in Orlando, and when 53 others are wounded.
I cannot stay silent when their families are either mourning or fearing for their loved ones.
I cannot stay silent when the Omar Mateens of the world prey on the innocent.
This country needs to do SOMETHING.
SOMETHING to prevent the mass shootings.
SOMETHING to stop the hate crimes.
SOMETHING to stop terrorists.
SOMETHING to end the violence.
If we are to become a more moral and rational society, we must not only stop violence when it happens, we need to do something to PREVENT violence. Call or e-mail your lawmaker (federal, state or local) and tell them what you think needs to be done to prevent senseless killings, whether it be for more funding and training for mental health care, or laws that prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, or anything else that ensures that hate crimes and mass shootings are prevented. Whether you are liberal, conservative or somewhere in the middle, you cannot and should not deny that the violence must end. CONTACT YOUR LAWMAKER!
I hope for a day when we react to our differences not with fear or hatred, but with love and understanding.
If you're reading this and you know someone who was at Pulse in Orlando, my thoughts and prayers are truly, truly with you.

Situation Not Normal
What would you do if your whole life you've been told that success is defined by academic achievement, compliance with parental demands and a vaguely defined philosophical "depth"? And then you suddenly get to a point in life where it wasn't enough to be consistently employed or to live a life full of freedom and purpose? And what would you do if on top of that, you lived with a parent who used to push you towards achievement, but now treats you like an extension of themself, controlling what you can and can't do? Some would have the drive to organize themselves, gather resources and get out of the situation somehow and ideally stay out. And in a perfect world, everyone would have the courage and fortitude to be this way. My sense, however, (which, full disclosure, is not perfect by any means) is that some people would just give in to the pressure, following the latest command and putting up with every order given to them. Needless to say, this outcome is tragic and disheartening as
Violence in Charlottesville
I spent six and a half years in Charlottesville when going for my Ph.D. I find it truly shocking that violence could erupt there. That a white supremacist/neo-Nazi rally could even happen there. One white supremacist rammed his car into anti-fascist counter-protestors, killing one and injuring 19. If that's not terrorism, I don't know what is.
White supremacist and neo-Nazi ideas do not belong in Charlottesville. Or anywhere. What does belong in Charlottesville and all across this world is love and caring for all human beings.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, as Obama did: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his
New A/C, new science, new art, new skillz.
Our A/C broke down last month, so we had to schedule to get a new A/C and heat pump. Cleaned out the laundry room last week so that there was enough room for people to come and install a new A/C and heat pump.
Needless to say, the new A/C is working fine.
In research, I'm in the middle of finishing up two papers, and starting two new ones. I hope to get these things done soon. Things have been going fine though (other than a few glitches here and there). I'm going to be meeting with one collaborator two weeks from now, and I think I'll be meeting another one later this week. Hopefully those meetings go well.
In art news, I'm getting b
Sorry for the lack of updates.
I wrote a research paper and sent it to co-authors. And I'm trying to complete some analysis for another one.
And gardening. I like the rewards of gardening (home-grown food), but I guess I'm in a position where I see gardening as interfering with more important things I have to do (research, art, playing flash games :P). It's kinda frustrating, really.
Well, at the very least, I've been getting good food. This past Crotafang Day (my birthday, May 1st), I had sushi and after that a tiramisu cake (REALLY GOOD). And I got a programming book as a gift from my dad; he knows I've been doing more scripting and programming.
